Course Outline:

The Nutrition Conditions and Diet Management course covers nutrition and diet management in the context of different conditions and how a guide to tailor diets for those specific conditions. The course will give you a solid grounding of nutrition for different conditions, including interventions relevant to these conditions, and circumstances that require special nutritional requirements. This incredibly unique course has been designed especially for Nutrition Consulting.

This module is recommended for students who have already done Foundations of Human Nutrition (Nutrition I) and/or Principles of Food Science (Nutrition II) or have previous knowledge or basic qualification in an Introductory course in Nutrition.

Learning Outcome:

Understand the different types of diabetes mellitus (including type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes, and prediabetes) and their signs and symptoms.

Understand hypertension, including its causes, symptoms, and risk factors, in addition to recognising the different lifestyle and nutritional intervention that can be used in cases of hypertension.

Define overweight and obesity in context of the Body Mass Index (BMI).

Learn about underweight and its causes, as well as nutritional changes that can be applied to gain weight healthily.

Understand food intolerance and differentiate between food allergies and intolerances.

Devise meal plans to ensure individuals with these intolerances receive sufficient nutrition.

A brief investigation of food safety, followed by insight into eating problems that can develop during cancer.

Apply nutritional considerations in the treatment of IBS with emphasis on dietary fibre, hydration and reducing the intake of foods clients are intolerant to/ allergic to.

Explore nutritional supplements and herbal supplements and how they may aid in cases of cardiovascular disease.

Investigate allergies and food intolerances, restrictive diets (including vegan and vegetarianism), and the importance how to maintain nutritional requirements for children in these diets.

Examine the special considerations for nutrition in athletes and supplements to aid in performance and recovery.

Understand food safety in pregnancy and the nutritional issues that can arise during pregnancy.
