Warts

Warts are very common, and often develop as small, rough lumps, which resemble solid blisters, or have a ‘cauliflower’ type appearance. Warts are caused by infection with the human papilloma virus (HPV), a family of over 100 viruses, some of which cause warts on the feet, hands or face. Other types of HPV only infect the tissue of the genital tract, which are referred to as ‘genital warts’. Warts can be spread by contact with skin infected by HPV, and also by contact with objects that have touched warts, such as towels. Genital warts are spread by sexual contact.

Asthma

Asthma is primarily a disorder of the airways of the lungs. People with asthma experience difficulty breathing as a result of constriction in their airways. Often people with asthma have very sensitive airways that narrow in response to certain "triggers”. The narrowing of the airway is due to inflammation and swelling of the airway lining, the production of excess mucus and the tightening of the airway muscles. Overall these reduced airflow capacity in and out of the lungs.

Pericarditis

Pericarditis is a condition that involves inflammation of the pericardium, which is the membrane that surrounds the heart. The role of the pericardium is to anchor the heart, and help prevent excessive movement in the chest due to breathing or body movement. Pericarditis is characterised by mild to severe chest pain, which often increases with deep breathing or lying flat, and is usually relieved by sitting up or leaning forward. Depending on the cause of pericarditis, individuals can also experience shortness of breath and fever.

Giardiasis

Giardiasis is a diarrheal illness caused by Giardia intestinalis (also known as Giardia lamblia) a microscopic single celled parasite that affects humans and animals. Giardia parasites can be found in contaminated food and water. Giardiasis is characterised by diarrhoea, nausea, flatulence and abdominal discomfort. The primary route of transmission for Giardiasis is faecal-oral (when faecal particles from one individual are introduced into the mouth of another). This can occur when an individual accidentally ingests water that has come in contact with faeces, food that has been handled with faeces present, or by poor cleaning after handling faeces.

The flu (Influenza)

Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness that is caused by different types of influenza virus. The flu is spread by coughs and sneezes, and can cause mild to severe illness, depending on which type of virus is responsible for the infection, and the health status of the infected individual. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a vaccination each year, but antiviral medications can also be effective for people who are unable to get vaccinated.

Avian Influenza (Bird Flu)

Bird Flu is a form of influenza, which is caused by a highly pathogenic subtype of the influenza A virus, called H5N1. The name H1N5 is based on two proteins that occur on the surface of the virus particles, hemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N). Avian influenza is a respiratory virus which predominantly causes fever, coughing, sore throat, muscle aches, and in severe cases breathing problems and pneumonia, which can be fatal.

Constipation

Constipation is a symptom, not a disease, and can be caused by many factors.
To understand constipation, it helps to be familiar with how the colon, or large intestine, works. When food travels through the colon, the water is absorbed by the colon while it forms stool. Muscle contractions in the colon then push the stool down toward the rectum. Upon reaching the rectum the stool is solid, because most of the water has been absorbed.

Osteoporosis

The skeleton acts as a rigid framework for the body by acting as a site for the attachment of muscles, protecting vital organs and by housing the bone marrow. Osteoporosis is a skeletal disease that is characterised by low bone density and deterioration of the bone tissue, which causes the bone to become more fragile and fracture much easier than normal. Regions of the skeleton can be replaced by bone remodelling, a process that involves the breakdown of old bone, which is reabsorbed by the body and then replaced by new bone. Under normal circumstances, the amount of old bone removed is balanced by the amount of new bone added. The main cause of osteoporosis is an imbalance in the remodelling process, where the amount of bone formed at certain sites is less than that which is reabsorbed or eroded.
